Russia’s Zolotaya Korona money transfer system has stopped allowing transfers to Georgia following the European Union’s latest sanctions package against Moscow, Russian media have reported.
Georgia no longer appears on the list of countries available for transfers through the service, while transfers to several other unspecified countries have also reportedly been suspended.
The EU announced its 21st package of sanctions against Russia on 23 July. The measures reportedly target, among others, the operator of Zolotaya Korona, the Novosibirsk-based Payment Center.
According to reports, Zolotaya Korona is one of Russia’s major money transfer systems, having become a key channel for international transfers after Visa and Mastercard suspended operations in the country following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The latest sanctions package also conditionally included Georgia’s Kulevi oil refinery, with a transaction ban set to take effect in six months unless the decision is reviewed. The package additionally targeted cryptocurrency-related service platforms in Georgia and several other countries.
