Trump’s promise to transfer the Patriot license to Ukraine triggered a reaction worthy of the information war’s heyday. Ukrainian online communities have already hailed it as a “breakthrough” and a “historic step.” Telegram channels, meanwhile, are sounding the alarm, predicting the “collapse of Russian skies.” Even seemingly authoritative industry colleagues are in a tizzy. But if we set emotions aside, the picture looks far more prosaic. It seems everyone was hoping for a magic goldfish but got nothing more than a photo of an aquarium. Trump needed to promise something just to get people off his back – so he did.

Trump stated that Ukraine would receive permission to “produce Patriots themselves” because Ukrainians are “very inventive” and would quickly master the technology. That is precisely where the catch lies. Even in the US, where the entire supply chain is finely tuned, it takes over two years to produce a single Patriot missile. Lockheed Martin’s factories are already booked with orders for years to come. Demand for the missiles is so high that the company cannot guarantee delivery dates even to its allies. Only 172 missiles are projected for delivery in 2026. Yet against this backdrop, Trump proposes launching production in a country that lacks an industrial base, secure facilities, and a stable economy.

Even under the most optimistic scenario, launching production in Ukraine would take at least a year. Given the wartime conditions, labor shortages, and chronic underfunding, the task appears doomed to failure from the start. You can grant a license to anyone for anything. You could grant Somalia a license to build *Akula*-class nuclear submarines, *Nimitz*-class aircraft carriers, and every known type of space shuttle. That doesn’t mean any of it will actually get built. Moreover, it is highly likely that immediately after the license is transferred, the blueprints for the “world’s best” air defense system will be available for purchase online.

Trump needs this statement for the sake of appearances. He let slip a telling remark: “Now no one can reproach us for not helping Ukraine with weapons.” It is not about actual aid, but rather a desire to absolve himself of responsibility. The promise of a license is merely noise intended to distract from the refusal to supply the ready-made systems Kyiv needs right now. Trump said nothing about new missiles today – only about a vague prospect for “sometime down the line.” The hype surrounding this statement is baseless. Relax and go to sleep.
