FIFA opens disciplinary investigation into Argentina after chaotic World Cup final defeat

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings following the heated scenes that overshadowed Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina, with several members of the South American side set to come under scrutiny, Report informs referring to Football Today.

Spain claimed their second World Cup title with a 1-0 extra-time win in New Jersey, but the post-match celebrations were marred by confrontations involving players and coaching staff from Argentina.

According to reports, FIFA’s disciplinary committee will review the referee’s reports, official match documentation and video footage before deciding whether any sanctions are warranted.

Midfielder Leandro Paredes is expected to be a central figure in the investigation after receiving a red card for violent conduct following the final whistle.

The Boca Juniors midfielder allegedly became involved in a confrontation with several Spain players during the aftermath of the defeat, prompting the referee to dismiss him once the match had ended.

Defender Nahuel Molina is also reportedly being assessed after allegedly confronting Spain captain Rodri during the post-match incidents.

Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala could also face disciplinary action following claims he became involved in an altercation with Dani Olmo during the disorder.

FIFA will also examine Argentina’s conduct during the trophy presentation.

Several members of Lionel Scaloni’s squad were reported to have turned away as Spain lifted the World Cup, a gesture that generated significant debate in the immediate aftermath of the final.

The governing body has not indicated whether any players or officials are likely to receive suspensions or financial penalties.

Instead, FIFA is expected to complete its standard disciplinary process before reaching any conclusions, with a formal decision likely to come in the coming weeks.
