Sovsun said Zelensky acknowledged the conflict but provided no clear rationale for removing the minister credited with major military reforms, News.Az reports, citing Kyiv Independent.

“Mr. Zelensky didn’t explain why he chose to take the side of Syrskyi and not Fedorov in this situation.”

Sovsun said the president’s decision has fueled speculation, including unconfirmed rumors that Fedorov’s growing popularity or his procurement reforms may have contributed to his dismissal.

She suggested changes to defense procurement disrupted vested interests inside the system.

“Fedorov has changed the logic of how procurement is taking place in the Ministry of Defense. And there are lots of groups who are not happy with this new logic.”

The opposition lawmaker also contrasted Fedorov’s removal with previous defense ministers who remained in office despite corruption scandals or limited achievements.

“There is a guy who is at least trying his best to do something good.”

Sovsun argued Zelensky underestimated public reaction, pointing to nationwide protests following the dismissal.

“He couldn’t anticipate that this would be the reaction.”

She said many Ukrainians viewed Fedorov as a symbol of a more technology-driven approach to the war, making his removal far more significant than a routine cabinet reshuffle.

Looking ahead, Sovsun said uncertainty remains over whether relations between Zelensky and Fedorov can be repaired or whether the former minister will pursue a new political path.

“It’s 50-50… they can make up… or it’s a total breakup and they will go their separate ways.”
