Tbilisi march honors Georgian fighters in Ukraine
The traditional Saturday march in Tbilisi on July 11 was dedicated to the memory of Georgian fighters killed while fighting against Russian aggression in Ukraine. It was the 591st consecutive day of pro-European protests in Georgia.
Participants marched carrying Georgian and Ukrainian flags. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than 120 Georgian citizens fighting alongside the Ukrainian army have been killed. Their families also took part in the Saturday march.
For more than a year and half – since November 2024 – continuous protests have been taking place in Georgia, with demonstrators demanding that the country return to the path of European integration. Every evening thousands, and often tens of thousands, gather in Tbilisi and several other cities. Over this time dozens of participants have been detained, many have faced criminal charges, and some have been sentenced to prison terms.
For the first time in the history of independent Georgia, the country has up to 150 prisoners of conscience, including women. Among them is Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of the popular outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti. In 2025 she was sentenced to two years in prison for slapping a police officer.
Protesters demand the release of all political prisoners, new parliamentary elections – as they do not recognize the results of the 2024 vote – and the repeal of all anti-democratic laws adopted over the past two years.
To suppress the protests, the ruling Georgian Dream party has increasingly tightened repression against civil society and the media. However, protests in various forms continue.

Police say a 28-year-old man has been arrested in South Yorkshire on suspicion of the murder of Ann Widdecombe, Report informs via BBC.
“The suspect, who is a white British national, is now in police custody,” a statement from Devon and Cornwall Police says.
Widdecombe, a former Conservative minister turned Reform UK spokesperson, was found dead with serious injuries at her home in Haytor, Devon at 11:40 BST on Thursday. Police believe she was attacked almost 24 hours earlier.
A man, 26, had been arrested earlier in Newton Abbot, 18km away on suspicion of murder before being released on Saturday, after which police said he was “no longer part of the investigation”.
The latest arrest took place at an address in South Yorkshire, police say, approximately 430 km from Widdecombe’s Devon property.
In its latest update, Devon and Cornwall Police said: “We were supported by Counter Terrorism Policing North East and South Yorkshire Police who carried out the arrest on behalf of Devon & Cornwall Police.
“At this time, there is still no information to suggest that this is a terrorism related incident and as a force we retain primacy of the investigation.”
It added: “This is a live and active investigation, and no further information will be issued tonight.”
Victims of the Srebrenica genocide were commemorated at Belgrade’s Republic Square on Friday, marking 30 years since the massacre, Report informs.
The Youth Initiative for Human Rights organized the memorial event. Participants lit candles and laid flowers in tribute to those killed.
The organization called on Serbian state institutions to adopt the United Nations General Assembly resolution on the Srebrenica genocide and implement its recommendations, including officially recognizing July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.
German Ambassador to Serbia Anke Konrad attended the event, which was held under police protection and concluded without incident.
July 11 is observed as the remembrance day for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. In July 1995, during the 1991–1995 war in the former Yugoslavia, Bosnian Serb forces killed at least 8,300 Bosniak Muslim men and boys in and around Srebrenica, in what international courts have recognized as genocide.
