Summary

The Ukraine-Russia war is intensifying with reciprocal strikes targeting critical infrastructure, while global energy markets face disruptions as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz slows amid regional tensions. Saudi Arabia and the U.S. coordinate to stabilize oil flows, but OPEC divisions and pipeline constraints complicate efforts. China’s warning to Russia against nuclear escalation underscores shifting alliances and heightened stakes in the conflict.

Key Stories

Ukraine strikes deepen Russia’s fuel crisis with refinery attacks — Ukrainian drone strikes have destroyed 42% of Russia’s refinery capacity, forcing gasoline rationing and exacerbating fuel shortages for 50 million Russians. Recent missile strikes on arms factories in Volgograd further disrupt Russian military production.

Strait of Hormuz shipping plummets amid regional tensions — Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed dramatically, with only five vessels transiting via Iranian waters in the past 24 hours. A vessel initially routing through a U.S.-designated safe zone diverted to the Iranian channel, suggesting heightened risks or coordination.

Saudi-U.S. coordination aims to stabilize oil flows despite OPEC rifts — Saudi Arabia and the U.S. are collaborating to maintain crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz, though volumes remain below pre-war levels. Alternate pipeline routes are constrained, and disputes over OPEC production caps persist, particularly between Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

China warns Russia against nuclear use as Ukraine war escalates — China has issued a direct warning to Russia against deploying nuclear weapons in Ukraine, reflecting Beijing’s growing influence over Moscow amid its reliance on Chinese military and economic support. The warning coincides with intensified Russian missile strikes on Kyiv.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive pressures Russia amid Kremlin infighting — Ukraine’s deep strikes on Russian infrastructure and military assets suggest a shifting balance in the war, with Kremlin insiders warning of internal power struggles. Analysts debate whether time favors Ukraine as Russia’s attrition strategy falters.
