Tsotne Ananidze Becomes New Chair of Adjara Supreme Council

Tsotne Ananidze, a Georgian Dream member, has become the new chair of the Supreme Council of the Adjara Autonomous Republic, the region’s legislative body, succeeding Davit Gabaidze, who resigned on March 30 after serving nearly ten years in the post.

Ananidze, 38, was the sole candidate. He was endorsed by 12 members of the Supreme Council, while none voted against him. Earlier media reports suggested he would likely take the post. He has chaired the Supreme Council’s Human Rights Issues Committee.

Ananidze thanked the council members for their “expressed trust” in him,” saying, “This is not a privilege – it is a responsibility, both to each one of you and to our shared goals and objectives, which encompasses, first and foremost, service to the people and the state.” He expressed hope the Council would achieve “significant successes” alongside a “wise” and “educated” prime minister.

The Supreme Council is the region’s 21-member legislative assembly. Following the 2024 parliamentary elections, Georgian Dream holds 13 seats, while part of the opposition is boycotting it.
