Tsikhanouskaya, an opponent of Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Moscow, said only a democratic Belarus could become a source of stability and security in the region.
“Lukashenko’s rhetoric is shifting: we are preparing for war, of course, we want peace, but we are gearing up for war. And that, of course, is very alarming for people,” she told reporters after meeting with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, on what she said was her first “working visit” to Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has recently warned of Belarus becoming more involved in Russia’s full-scale war, now well into its fifth year. He said Ukraine would beef up its northern defences in preparation for any possible new Russian offensive, including from Belarusian territory.
Last week Lukashenko dismissed any notion that Minsk would be dragged into the war, but said that, together with Russia, it would defend itself in the event of aggression.

Venice – where controversy flared in recent weeks over Russia’s presence at the Biennale Art Festival – has been governed by the right for the past decade, but opinion polls published this month had pointed to a centre-left lead.
However, centre-right candidate Simone Venturini won nearly 51% of the vote, the latest projections showed, ahead of his main opponent’s 39%, avoiding the runoff required when no candidate secures more than 50%.
Polling company Youtrend called the result for Venturini, saying the size of his lead meant the outcome was no longer in doubt.
“(Opposition) turned up in Venice convinced they could push the narrative that Meloni was finished, that the centre-right was in crisis. Then Italians went to the polls and those expectations ran up against reality,” said Giovanni Donzelli, a senior lawmaker with Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party.

On May 11, Spain’s health minister announced that one Spanish passenger aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship had tested positive for hantavirus shortly after authorities completed the vessel’s evacuation operation.
Authorities said on Monday that the individual had already been under clinical surveillance and isolation since admission, “in accordance with the protocols established by the Early Warning and Rapid Response System.”
Following confirmation via PCR testing, the patient was transferred to the High-Level Isolation Unit at Gomez Ulla Hospital, where they will remain under specialized medical supervision and strict biosafety measures.
“The patient will remain admitted under specialized medical supervision and with the biosafety measures provided for this type of case,” the ministry said.
Health authorities stressed that the detection was made within an already activated control system.
“The detection of the case has occurred within the already activated isolation and control system, so it does not alter the risk situation for the general population,” it added.
Hantavirus is a rare disease usually transmitted through infected rodents or their droppings. However, the strain responsible for this outbreak, the Andes virus, can also spread between humans through prolonged close contact, often in enclosed settings.

Despite a ceasefire that came into effect on April 17, Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have continued to exchange fire on a near-daily basis.

Later on Monday, Adraee issued another evacuation warning directed at residents of a building in Rashidieh and two buildings in Burj al-Shamali, near the city of Tyre.
According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli strikes since early March have killed more than 3,100 people.
The Israeli military also announced on Monday that a soldier had been killed the previous day in southern Lebanon.
That brings the number of Israeli soldiers killed since the outbreak of hostilities with Hezbollah to 23. One civilian contractor has also been killed.
