Dhvanit Rajdeep, a 23-year-old Indian medical student at the Caucasus International University (CIU) in Georgia, has been missing for nearly two weeks, the university confirmed on May 27, following reports by Indian media outlets about his disappearance after an alleged conflict with his Indian landlord in Tbilisi.
CIU said it received a report of Rajdeep’s disappearance on May 15 and immediately contacted the emergency service. “According to law enforcement agencies, a case was opened that same day and investigative proceedings are actively underway,” the CIU said, adding that it has been cooperating with the investigators, providing “all necessary information,” and maintaining communication with the student’s family and the Embassy of India in Georgia.
According to the university, Rajdeep was reportedly last seen on May 14 at 3:30 p.m. near the Caucasus Medical Centre in Tbilisi’s Saburtalo district.
The CIU’s statement followed reports from Indian media outlets, including India Today, which said in a May 25 report that Rajdeep had been missing for nearly two weeks after an alleged dispute with his landlord, Anil, identified as a South Indian man living in Tbilisi.
According to India Today, Rajdeep last spoke to his father on May 14 before the call abruptly disconnected, and his phone was subsequently switched off.
The outlet cited Rajdeep’s father, Mayur Rajdeep, as saying that his son had faced “severe harassment” from his landlord and several roommates at his accommodation. According to the report, Rajdeep claimed they “stole his money, food, and clothes,” and when “Dhvanit decided to move out, Anil refused to return his deposit and, along with his accomplices, extorted money, totalling $6,500, from Dhvanit’s account, while keeping him locked in a room and seizing his phone.”
The outlet said that after Rajdeep was released, Rajdeep’s father sent him a flight ticket back to India, and that he “collected his passport and phone to leave for the airport when his call suddenly cut off mid-conversation.”According to the outlet, the student’s parents noted that “while the Indian Embassy and local political leaders are assisting them, they are receiving no cooperation from the Georgian police, local administration, or the university.”
India Today further reported that WhatsApp messages between Rajdeep’s father and the landlord Anil, well before the student went messing, allegedly revealed that Rajdeep and the landlord had previous “multiple altercations,” including “an incident where he allegedly hit Anil’s girlfriend. In retaliation, Anil had threatened Dhvanit’s father, warning that he would severely beat up the student for his actions.”
Rajdeep’s elder brother, Mihir, reached Georgia from Canada and has been in contact with police and university representatives regarding the investigation, the outlet said, adding that “through him, Dhanvit’s parents got to know that the local administration had not taken any serious steps against the accused, Anil, his friend Manya, and a local Georgian. All of them have been released after a brief round of questioning.”
