Person Who Drove Into Patriarchate Yard Acted on Grounds of ‘Religious Intolerance,’ Prosecutors Say

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia charged one person with “hooliganism” and “property damage” over the May 20 incident in which a car was driven into the courtyard of the Patriarchate of Georgia in downtown Tbilisi, saying the suspect acted on grounds of “religious intolerance.”

In a May 22 statement, the Prosecutor’s Office described the indicent in which the car crashed through a barrier, forced open the gate and struck another vehicle parked inside the courtyard. “After damaging the vehicle, he threatened individuals present in the courtyard, expressed blatant disrespect toward society through threats of violence, and disrupted public order,” the statement said, adding that “the victims sustained material damages amounting to GEL 9,350,” about USD 3,500.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant, who was arrested the same day, has been charged under Part 1 of Article 187 of Georgia’s Criminal Code (damage to another person’s property) and Part 3 of Article 239 (hooliganism committed using an object as a weapon), facing up to seven years in prison. The statement added that prosecutors will request the court to impose pretrial detention as a preventive measure.

“Within the framework of the ongoing criminal investigation, a psychiatric examination has been ordered for the defendant,” the statement added.

Pro-government media on May 21 released footage of the incident, filmed from what appears to be a fixed traffic camera overlooking the road. The video shows a white Toyota Prius crossing into oncoming traffic, turning sharply toward the Patriarchate gate, and then driving at speed into the closed entrance, breaking through a barrier arm and forcing the metal gates open. The car continues into the courtyard and crashes into another vehicle parked inside.
