More than 220,000 people have been evacuated as wildfires spread across France and Spain, with extreme heat, drought and strong winds making conditions increasingly difficult for firefighters. In southwestern France, authorities ordered the evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula as fires threatened homes, campsites and tourist areas.
In Spain, a national emergency was declared after multiple blazes merged near Madrid and forced thousands to leave their homes.
The wildfires come as southern Europe faces another intense summer of heat, with scientists warning that climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
