SpaceX’s next-generation Starship reached orbit for the first time on Monday and deployed its first batch of new Starlink satellites, overcoming an unexpected engine shutdown that initially appeared likely to prevent the milestone.
The problem forced SpaceX to cut the planned 10-hour mission to three hours.
Starship later performed a controlled descent into the Pacific, flipping upright before hitting the water and erupting in a fireball, as planned, with SpaceX not intending to recover the spacecraft.
