Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports and Belgium’s Ghent University have signed a memorandum of understanding to introduce courses on Armenian studies, the ministry said.

The memorandum was signed remotely by Armenia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Belgium, Tigran Balayan, and Ghent University Rector Petra De Sutter.

Under the agreement, courses on Armenian history and culture will be offered at Ghent University. The cooperation will also include workshops, seminars, thematic academic days, the development of educational modules within existing courses, and public awareness events dedicated to Armenian studies.

The ministry said it cooperates with leading universities worldwide to promote the development of Armenian studies by supporting the teaching and research of the Armenian language, literature, history and culture.

Currently, with funding from Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Armenian studies courses and research activities are conducted at 14 leading universities in 11 countries. These include Sapienza University of Rome, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the University of Salzburg, Complutense University of Madrid, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, and Cairo University, among others.

The ministry noted that the number of participating universities continues to grow, expanding the geographical reach of international academic cooperation and supporting the sustainable development of Armenian studies.

Strengthening cooperation among Armenian studies centers and increasing the field’s visibility in international academic circles remain key priorities of Armenia’s state policy, the ministry added.
