Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Uruguay, beginning a nearly two-week tour of South America that will also take him to Argentina and Peru.

The trip marks his first overseas visit since undergoing surgery related to lung cancer three weeks ago.

During his three-day stay in Uruguay, the pontiff is due to meet President Yamandú Orsi and attend public events, including a prayer vigil at Montevideo’s Centenario Stadium.

He will then travel to Argentina, the birthplace of his predecessor Pope Francis, where he is scheduled to meet President Javier Milei, business leaders, trade unions and representatives of social organisations.

The final leg will take Leo to Peru, where he lived and served as a priest for two decades. His programme includes Masses in his former diocese of Chiclayo, Cusco and the Peruvian Amazon.
