Amazon Leo internet network nears 400 satellites in orbit

Early on Thursday, a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket lifted off from Florida carrying Amazon’s latest batch of 29 satellites. This mission marked the eighth and final Atlas V flight reserved for the project. Moving forward, deployment will shift to next-generation heavy-lift vehicles to complete the planned 3,200-satellite constellation designed to provide global high-speed internet coverage, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.

Chris Weber, Amazon Leo’s vice president of business and product, confirmed on social media that the network now has enough assets in space to support continuous connectivity across its initial targeted latitudes. While initial services are expected to roll out near the Earth’s polar regions and gradually expand toward the equator, Amazon has not yet detailed specific launch regions or consumer pricing.

The emerging Leo network—originally developed under the codename Project Kuiper—is positioning itself as a direct competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink, which currently dominates the market with roughly 10,000 active satellites. Amazon plans to serve a wide array of clients, offering terminal configurations ranging from residential-sized units to high-capacity options for corporate enterprises, government agencies, and commercial airlines.

UK sentences Iraqi ISIS member over illegal entry

Mohammed Yaseen, 35, pleaded guilty to attempting to enter the UK without valid immigration clearance. Prosecutors told Winchester Crown Court that he had served four years and three months in prison for ISIS membership and participation in a terrorist organization. Although barred from returning to Germany for 20 years, he was not deported to Iraq and instead traveled to Britain after watching TikTok videos portraying the country as welcoming to asylum seekers and respectful of human rights, News.Az reports, citing Shafaq news.

Yaseen crossed the English Channel on Dec. 13 aboard a small boat carrying about 80 migrants. After being intercepted and taken to an immigration facility in Kent, he allegedly identified himself as Kuwaiti and applied for asylum, but fingerprint checks later confirmed his identity, leading to his arrest at a hotel in Basingstoke on Christmas Eve. The prosecution also alleged that he had used false identities in asylum applications in both Germany and the UK.

Evidence from the German case showed that Yaseen joined ISIS in Iraq in 2014, witnessed public executions, stonings, and floggings, and was found carrying a Kalashnikov rifle, with the prosecution arguing that his extremist background placed him in the “high-risk” category across all security assessments.

Defense lawyer Katie Porter-Windley maintained that her client’s terrorism conviction was unrelated to the immigration offense and said he had committed no further crimes in the UK, while also contending that an Arabic interpreter was required to communicate with him, an assertion the prosecution disputed.

Judge Parker ruled that Yaseen had voluntarily joined and supported ISIS before imposing the two-year sentence. He could face deportation after completing his prison term.

Lockheed Martin leads for $3.5B Ultra Maritime deal

Lockheed Martin Corporation has reportedly emerged as the leading bidder to acquire Ultra Maritime, a naval defense company, for around $3.5 billion, with a deal potentially nearing completion as early as next week.

Shares of Lockheed Martin fell over 1.4% in after-hours trade following the report. The company would stand to reflect a significant balance-sheet commitment if the acquisition closes, News.Az reports, citing The Financial Times.

***

With a market capitalization in the range of roughly $110 billion, the $3.5 billion price tag is material but manageable, representing a targeted bet on underwater warfare capabilities rather than a transformative merger.

Financial Times reported that talks remain ongoing and no agreement has been formally reached, though sources indicate a public announcement could come as soon as early next week. Ultra Maritime is a division of Advent’s Cobham Ultra business and specializes in anti-submarine warfare technology, including buoys designed to detect torpedoes and submarines. Both the U.S. Navy and Britain’s Royal Navy are customers of the platform, underscoring the strategic sensitivity of the asset and the geopolitical complexity that any buyer will have to navigate.

Advent assembled the Cobham Ultra portfolio through two large transactions: the £4 billion take-private of British defense group Cobham in 2019, followed by the £2.6 billion acquisition of Ultra Electronics two years later, as Financial Times noted. Ultra Maritime represents one of the more technologically differentiated pieces of that assembled business, which is why it has attracted competitive interest. Bloomberg previously reported that Advent put Ultra Maritime up for sale earlier this year.
