Trade turnover between Azerbaijan and the United States rose sharply in the first quarter of this year, increasing 2.2 times compared to the same period last year and reaching $296 million, according to figures discussed at a session of the Milli Majlis, AzerNEWS reports.

Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) announced on June 5 that it has detained a person on an international wanted list for serious crimes, in coordination with the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to the ministry, the operation was carried out by the Central Criminal Police Department and the General Prosecutor’s Office, “within the framework of a joint declaration signed with representatives of the United States Department of State” and “as a result of close bilateral coordination” with the FBI.

The suspect was detained at Tbilisi International Airport. In a video of the detention released by the MIA, the person is seen being taken into custody, though the ministry did not disclose the individual’s identity. The person is wanted by the United States on charges of “aiding and complicity in criminal activity, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering.” Extradition procedures are currently underway.

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has already been successfully cooperating with the law enforcement agencies of the United States of America for many years against various categories of crime, including organized crime,” MIA noted.

Separately on June 4, Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze met with the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States, Mark Nordberg. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the American side “expressed gratitude for close cooperation,” which led to the identification of organized criminal groups and the prosecution of several individuals in connection with fraudulent visa and asylum schemes, uncovered through joint efforts with the U.S. Embassy’s Regional Security Office (RSO). “At the end of the meeting, the parties emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation and expressed readiness to further deepen it in the future.”
