U.S. DTRA Provides Forensic Laboratory to Georgia’s Interior Ministry

The U.S Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) provided a laboratory worth USD 733,490 to the Forensic-Criminalistic Department (FCD) of Georgia’s Interior Ministry, following similar donations in recent weeks. The Georgian ministry said the laboratory was part of a joint project carried out by the two agencies over the past two years.

“Today’s installation of the FCD lab marks yet another positive development in this long history of cooperation we have together,” David Canaday, head of the DTRA’s regional office, said in a video published by the Georgian Interior Ministry alongside a press release on January 21.

The U.S. follows similar contributions earlier in recent weeks. On January 16, the U.S. military donated firefighting and communications equipment worth USD 234,150 to Georgia’s Emergency Management Service. Earlier, Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze signed a decree authorizing a USD 10.4 million U.S. grant of communications equipment and related goods to Georgia’s Defense Ministry.

It also comes amid strained relations between Washington and Tbilisi. In November 2024, the United States suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia and later imposed sanctions on several Georgian officials, including Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili.

Since returning to office in January 2025, the Trump administration has largely remained silent on Georgia, despite repeated statements by the Georgian Dream government expressing ideological alignment with Trump and its willingness to reset bilateral relations.
