A new dress code in Azerbaijan’s schools has sparked protests by parents and students after reports that girls wearing hijabs, or Islamic head scarves, were turned away from classes. The protests come after a new ban on clothing deemed incompatible with the secular nature of education. Although the policy does not specifically mention the hijab, some parents have voiced concerns that their right to religious expression is being violated.
