Peaceful settlement must serve the early, just and lasting resolution of all disputes, and mediation must be impartial and conducted in accordance with the United Nations (UN) Charter and international law, Elvin Ashrafzada, Deputy Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN, Report informs.

Ashrafzada made the remark at the high-level open debate on “Strengthening the mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes: follow-up to UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution 2788 (2025).”

“It was underscored that the effectiveness of peaceful-settlement mechanisms depends on the implementation of decisions already taken,” the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the UN said in a post on X.

In this context, reference was made to Azerbaijan’s own experience, where relevant Security Council resolutions remained unimplemented for nearly three decades despite their clear demands.

“Special attention was drawn to the significance of greater solidarity with countries that are overcoming the severe consequences of conflict, rebuilding devastated cities, rehabilitating the destroyed environment and biodiversity, and helping forcibly displaced populations return to their homes in safety and dignity,” reads the post.

During the First Karabakh War, the UN Security Council adopted four resolutions (822, 853, 874, and 884) in 1993 regarding the occupation of Azerbaijani territories. Each of these documents affirmed Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and demanded the immediate withdrawal of Armenia’s occupying forces from Karabakh. Since the resolutions remained on paper, Azerbaijan itself implemented the relevant decisions of the largest institution during the 44-day Patriotic War in 2020, and the territories were liberated from Armenian occupation. With the local-scale anti-terrorist measures carried out in Karabakh on September 19-20, 2023, Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty were fully restored.

According to the official exchange rates of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan for today, the US dollar remained unchanged at 1.7000 manats, the euro decreased by 0.5% to 1.9345 manats, and 100 Russian rubles fell by 0.07% to 2.1711 manats.
