Gunmen opened fire on mourners at a funeral in a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan’s southern Karak province on Friday, killing at least six people and wounding 34, according to Jordanian security officials. Survivors said they heard an explosion before masked attackers entered the church and shot for several minutes.
Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya described the attack as ‘terrorist’ and ‘unprecedented’, and said it was carried out by a group of extremists. Security forces are hunting for the gunmen, and no group has claimed responsibility.
King Abdullah II vowed to confront the attackers with ‘the harshest penalties’.
