Uganda has nominated Olara Otunnu, the country’s former permanent representative to the United Nations and former UN special representative for children and armed conflict, for the post of UN secretary-general, Report informs.
La Neice Collins, a representative of the office of the president of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, said this.
“The president of the General Assembly has received a notification from the Republic of Uganda regarding the nomination of Olara Otunnu for the post of secretary-general,” the statement said.
Otunnu began his diplomatic career in the 1980s as Uganda’s permanent representative to the United Nations. He is also credited with creating the system of preliminary straw polls in the UN Security Council during the selection of the organization’s secretary-general.
The 75-year-old diplomat has served in different years as vice president of the UN General Assembly, special representative of the secretary-general for children and armed conflict, and foreign minister of Uganda.
