A painting by renowned marine artist Hovhannes (Ivan) Aivazovsky will be among the highlights of an upcoming auction at the Moscow Auction House, where works by some of Russia’s most celebrated painters will go under the hammer on July 26, Interfax
According to the auction house, Aivazovsky’s “Off the Coast of Yalta” is expected to fetch $420,000, making it one of the most valuable lots in the sale.
The auction will feature works by prominent artists including Konstantin Makovsky, Nicholas Roerich, Mikhail Nesterov, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Boris Grigoriev, Boris Kustodiev, and others. The total estimated value of the collection is around 1 billion rubles, making the event one of the most significant of the current art season, according to the organizers.
Among the other top lots is Nicholas Roerich’s Idol Place (Idolskoye Mesto), a pastel dating from the late 1900s. The work, estimated at 18 million rubles, is considered of museum importance due to the limited number of Roerich’s surviving works created in Russia.
Also featured in the sale is Mikhail Nesterov’s By the Skete (1925), estimated at $200,000, and Pyotr Konchalovsky’s Pines in Autumn, a work from the artist’s later period, with an estimated value of 16 million rubles.
Hovhannes Aivazovsky (1817–1900), one of the world’s most celebrated marine painters, is renowned for his dramatic seascapes and remains among the most sought-after artists at auctions across the region. His works regularly command high prices, reflecting enduring international interest in his artistic legacy.
