The UK has announced changes to its immigration rules, extending the qualifying period for permanent residency, known as indefinite leave to remain, from five to 10 years for most immigrants.
The new rules, set to take effect next year, will link eligibility to income. Workers earning more than £50,000 ($67,000) a year will be eligible to apply after five years, while those earning £125,000 ($167,000) will qualify after three years.
Everyone else will be placed on a ten-year pathway, with an exception for care workers. Care workers will be able to apply for settlement after five years, provided they meet their visa conditions and earn at least £25,000 ($33,500) annually.
