Israel’s Central Elections Committee has rejected a request by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party and other right-wing parties to extend voting beyond the scheduled 10 PM cutoff. The committee said the circumstances did not justify an extension, citing high nationwide turnout across all sectors of society. Voters already in line by 10 PM will still be allowed to cast their ballots. Netanyahu’s rivals have argued that the request was an attempt to lay the groundwork for challenging the election results. Israelis are voting in the country’s first nationwide election since the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023, the deadliest day in Israel’s history.
