Egypt’s parliament has authorised the military to support the defence of Saudi Arabia if requested, amid escalating attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had sought approval to assist Cairo’s Gulf ally as the conflict threatens regional security and shipping routes.
Egypt has previously supported the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, mainly through naval operations in the Red Sea.
