Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed a Vatican initiative to deliver humanitarian supplies to civilians in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian town of Oleshky and agreed to cooperate on the effort.
The announcement by the Kremlin followed a call with Pope Leo XIV, who urged a ceasefire to allow food and medical supplies into the town and enable the voluntary evacuation of civilians.
Oleshky, in Ukraine’s Kherson region, faces a worsening food crisis. The town is home to approximately 1,700 people, including 47 children, according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of obstructing supplies to the town.
