Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said it detained a Japanese journalist working for the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper on suspicion of gathering information about the country’s defence capabilities, Russian news agencies reported on 13 October.
The journalist was detained in the Sakhalin region before he was due to leave Russia, then transferred to Moscow, where a court ordered him held in custody for nearly two months, Interfax reported.
Footage aired by Russian state television reportedly shows the detention.
