Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed a law banning the production, sale and import of the French delicacy foie gras. Foie gras is made from the enlarged liver of ducks or geese that are force-fed to increase the size of their livers. The practice has long been criticised by animal welfare organisations, while supporters argue it is part of France’s culinary heritage. Although Brazil’s domestic foie gras production is limited, the new law will also halt imports of the luxury food item, which comes primarily from France.
