Georgian president attends Khamenei’s funeral

Georgia‘s President Mikheil Kavelashvili will travel to Tehran to attend the funeral ceremony of Iran‘s late supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. The president’s administration confirmed the information.

President Mikheil Kavelashvili, together with leaders from across the region, including Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia and other countries, will attend the funeral ceremony of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran,” the administration said.

The mourning ceremony will begin in Tehran on 4 July and end on 9 July with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral in the city of Mashhad.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in late February 2026 during a large-scale US-Israeli air operation against Iran. According to Iranian and international sources, around 40 military commanders and senior officials were killed along with Khamenei during the first strikes on 28 February.

Following Khamenei’s death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was elected Iran’s new supreme leader. However, international media reports say the military leadership of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) currently plays the decisive role in running the country.
