Woman From Azerbaijan Victim of Femicide in Tbilisi, Rights Defender Reports

A young woman from Azerbaijan was found killed in an apartment in Tbilisi after being tricked into coming to Georgia by a boyfriend and later placed in the care of a male relative, women’s rights advocate Baia Pataraia reported on social media on July 1, noting that her organization, Sapari, is seeking to get involved in the case.

According to Pataraia, who said she first learned of the case from a Russian influencer, the victim was a young orphan from Azerbaijan who was “lured” to Georgia by her boyfriend, who promised they would live and work together.

“The promised job never materialized,” Pataraia said, adding that after the couple ran out of money, the boyfriend pawned the woman’s iPhone after “severely beating her,” then abandoned her and returned to Azerbaijan alone.

An Armenian woman in Georgia took in the beaten woman, Pataraia continued, saying that she helped her contact relatives in Azerbaijan. A young male relative later traveled to Tbilisi, promising to rent her an apartment and arrange her return to Azerbaijan once the situation had calmed down. “Everything seemed normal, but the girl soon disappeared,” Pataraia wrote.

According to her, after the victim’s younger sister in Azerbaijan lost contact with her for several days, she asked the Armenian woman to check the apartment. Neighbours reportedly told her they had heard a “loud argument” the previous night, yet nobody called the police. Police forced open the door after being alerted and found the woman “murdered” inside, Pataraia said.

According to Pataraia, the suspected killer fled to Turkey and has been declared wanted. Authorities have not publicly reported on the case.

She said Sapari has applied to Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office to be admitted to the proceedings as the victim’s legal representative, adding that the victim’s younger sister, who lives in Azerbaijan and is her only immediate family member, must first be recognized as her legal successor.

According to Pataraia, the murder has been reportedly portrayed by the victim’s relatives in Azerbaijan as an “honor crime,” with the woman being blamed and the alleged perpetrator being defended.
