Georgian Dream Defense Minister Irakli Chikovani participated in the 35th meeting of the Ramstein format, held at NATO headquarters in Brussels on June 18. The gathering brought together defense ministers and senior officials from NATO member and partner countries, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to discuss the war in Ukraine and additional military assistance.

The Ramstein format, formally known as the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, was launched under the U.S. initiative in April 2022 and has since served as a key platform for coordinating international defense support to Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion. Since February 2025, the meetings have been co-coordinated by Germany and the United Kingdom.

UK Secretary of State for Defense Dan Jarvis and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius co-hosted the meeting, according to the Georgia’s Defense Ministry press release. Zelenskyy, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby, addressed participants.

“We had good meetings and talks with all the leaders, including President Trump,” Zelenskyy said in his address, adding, “The President of the United States is very clear about increasing pressure on Russia to end this terrible war Russia has brought against Ukraine and all of Europe. And this is also the shared position of all G7 leaders. We are grateful for this unity. “

He said that “today, Ukraine and Germany are taking a very important […] step,” explaining that both countries’ defense ministers signed an agreement about technologies, “to bring these capabilities together.” He also thanked the EU for the €90 billion support package, saying, “If we want Europe to have the strongest army, one that can truly respond to any threat, this is only possible with long-term cooperation with Ukraine.”
