Russell takes Barcelona pole ahead of Hamilton, Leclerc crashes

Italian Antonelli, who will be seeking his sixth win in ‌a row on Sunday to extend what is currently a 66-point lead over seven-times world champion Hamilton, qualified third with McLaren’s world champion Lando Norris fourth, News.az reports, citing Reuters

***

Mercedes have taken pole for all seven F1 races so far in 2026, and Saturday was Russell’s third of the season to 19-year-old Antonelli’s four, in a morale boost for the Briton as he seeks to bounce back from two races without scoring.

The team are unbeaten in regular grands prix this campaign.

“Nice to feel in the groove again,” said Russell over the team radio after lapping 0.064 of a second quicker than compatriot Hamilton for a 10th career pole ahead of what will be his 100th grand prix for Mercedes.

“It’s been a great weekend so far. I feel like my old self again where every lap I’m doing the job, always fighting in those top positions,” he added later.

“The last few races for numerous reasons haven’t quite been on our side but I came in this weekend with a clean slate, felt good and it’s great to be on pole.”

LECLERC ‘ASHAMED’ AFTER SUFFERING ANOTHER CRASH

The final phase of qualifying was briefly halted after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed into the tyre wall at turn four.

Leclerc clambered out and walked away after his third crash in eight days, with incidents in both qualifying and the race at his home Monaco Grand Prix last weekend.

The Monegasque blamed himself, offering no excuses and saying he felt ashamed.

He will start 10th, unless changes to the engine and gearbox are required.

Hamilton was fastest in the first phase of qualifying, ahead of Russell and Leclerc, and will be chasing his first win since 2024 and first for Ferrari after finishing runner-up in the last two races.

“The Mercedes guys did a good ‌lap and congrats to George, but we are in a good a position to be able to fight tomorrow. We have a race,” said the 40-year-old, who had looked like taking a first pole in nearly three years but lost time towards the end of his lap.

Antonelli, who won from pole in Monaco, briefly went top with his final effort before Russell and then Hamilton found more speed.

“It’s been a little bit of a difficult weekend so far. I didn’t really have the feeling with the car,” said the teenager.

The Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar qualified fifth and sixth, with Oscar Piastri, last year’s winner from pole, seventh for McLaren who had looked quick on Friday.

“I think we’ve taken steps forward. We brought some little parts that seem to have helped fractionally and at the minute fractions of a second can make a difference,” said Norris, who felt a win remained out of reach.

“I think it’s nice that we could bounce back after a disappointing weekend (in Monaco), but we were three-and-a-half tenths off pole and that’s a big amount.”

ALONSO TO LINE UP LAST

The pole for Mercedes also tied Ferrari’s record of 256 by a power unit manufacturer.

Russell will actually be starting from the top slot for the 11th time but, by a statistical quirk, the Sao Paulo 2022 pole went to Haas’s Kevin Magnussen even if the Dane did not start from the front.

Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson will start in eighth place with Nico Hulkenberg ninth for Audi.

Double world champion Fernando Alonso qualified last for Aston Martin ahead of what is likely his final Barcelona appearance, with the race off the calendar next year and the 44-year-old Spaniard out of contract at the end of the season.

Fukushima wastewater discharge halted again after alarm at nuclear plant

Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) said the alarm sounded at approximately 5:05 p.m. local time on Saturday when a drop in water flow was detected in the pumping system responsible for the discharge operation, News.az reports.

***

Following an inspection, the company reported that no equipment failure had been found. TEPCO said a brief simultaneous outage affecting two power transmission circuits caused seawater transfer pump flow rates to decrease, triggering the automatic closure of an emergency shutoff valve and halting the wastewater release process.

The utility said the discharge operation will resume once the necessary preparations have been completed.

Second Fukushima Wastewater Discharge Interruption in One Week
The latest suspension marks the second disruption to Fukushima wastewater discharge operations in recent days. A previous alarm on Wednesday forced a temporary halt after a suspected valve malfunction was detected in a storage tank. The release resumed the following day after the affected valve was replaced.

TEPCO launched the 20th round of treated wastewater discharge from the Fukushima plant on June 1 as part of its long-term decommissioning and water management program.

Thousands of Tonnes of Treated Wastewater Scheduled for Release
Under the company’s current plan, the latest discharge cycle is expected to continue through June 19. Approximately 7,800 tonnes of treated wastewater are scheduled to be released into the ocean during this phase.

According to TEPCO, the discharged water contains around 1.3 trillion becquerels of tritium, a radioactive isotope that remains in the treated water after processing.

The wastewater release program has remained a subject of international debate since Japan began ocean discharges in 2023, with neighboring countries and environmental groups continuing to monitor the process closely.

Why one new coin is being likened to buying Ethereum (ETH) below $10

A comparison is circulating in crypto circles right now, and it involves Little Pepe. The $LILPEPE presale has prompted a conversation that any veteran crypto investor will recognize: the idea that getting into a project at the ground floor, before the market has a chance to price it properly, is the closest thing to buying Ethereum when it was worth less than a cup of coffee.

The ETH Below $10 Reference, and Why It Hits

Ethereum spent years trading in the single digits. ETH spent years trading at almost nothing. The market caught up fast. The ones who won were never just watching charts. They were the ones who understood the innovation early enough to act on it. The comparison being drawn to $LILPEPE is not about price targets or guaranteed outcomes. It is about timing and infrastructure. Ethereum succeeded because it was not just a coin. It was a programmable foundation that the entire DeFi space eventually built on. The argument for $LILPEPE is structurally similar, and that is exactly what has people paying attention.

A Meme Coin That Is Actually Building Something

Little Pepe is not just launching a token. Little Pepe Chain is a Layer 2 on Ethereum built for speed, low fees, and DeFi. That is a different proposition from a token that exists purely as a speculative instrument. The EVM compatibility matters. It means developers can deploy existing Ethereum smart contracts to the Little Pepe Chain with minimal friction, lowering the barrier to ecosystem growth. The staking program adds another layer to this. With 13.5% of total supply allocated to staking and rewards, the project is designing for retention, not just acquisition. That distinction separates early infrastructure plays from tokens built to ride a single news cycle.

Getting In Before the Market Catches Up

The presale is where the early-mover comparison is most direct. $LILPEPE has a total supply of 100 billion tokens, with 26.5% allocated to presale participants. The broader tokenomics place chain reserves at 30%, with liquidity and CEX reserves each holding 10%. Zero tax on transactions is also part of the structure. No buy tax, no sell tax. For traders who watched fee mechanics quietly drain positions on earlier meme coin cycles, that detail carries weight. The dedicated liquidity allocation means the token should arrive on decentralized exchanges with real market depth rather than thin order books sustained solely by launch hype.

The Audit Is the Part Most Projects Skip

One element that makes the ETH comparison more credible is the smart contract audit. Little Pepe worked with Freshcoins to conduct a full audit covering contract logic, access controls, potential attack vectors, gas efficiency, and ERC20 compliance. The report is public. No critical vulnerabilities were identified. The fact that $LILPEPE has undergone professional review before the presale closes removes a layer of risk that most meme coin projects leave in place.

$777,000 That Keeps the Community In

The ongoing $777,000 giveaway fits the early adoption narrative, too. Ten winners will each take home $77,000 worth of $LILPEPE tokens. Entry requires a minimum $100 presale contribution at littlepepe.com, plus completion of social community tasks. This is not aimed at spectators. It rewards people who are already participating. That kind of structure keeps early community members engaged during what is typically the most fragile window of any project’s life, the gap between presale and first exchange listing.

What the Comparison Is Really About

Nobody is saying $LILPEPE is Ethereum. That is not the point being made. The point is that early opportunities in projects with real infrastructure tend to get recognized only in hindsight. A Layer 2 chain, EVM compatibility, a DeFi roadmap, zero tax, and a public smart contract audit are not standard meme coin credentials. Trump says agreement with Iran scheduled to be signed Sunday

“At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 Bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States,” Trump posted on Truth Social, News.az reports, citing Xinhua.

***

The president said that “hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly” but added that if it doesn’t, “we have the ultimate alternative.”

The memorandum of understanding being negotiated between the US and Iran states that, if signed, it would trigger a 60-day period for “technical” negotiations to take place, a senior Trump administration official said Friday.

While the memorandum outlines a series of topline commitments that Iran must agree to — including the dismantling of its nuclear program, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the US destroying Iran’s enriched material — the highly technical talks will focus on how to specifically implement and carry out those points, the official said.

Amazon voiced concerns about Anthropic AI models before US government’s crackdown

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment, News.az reports, citing Reuters

***

Citing national security concerns, the Trump administration on Friday directed Anthropic to block any foreign nationals, whether inside or outside the U.S., from using its latest models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. In response, Anthropic said it would disable access to the models globally.

In a blog post, Anthropic said on Friday that the U.S. government believes there is a method of bypassing, or “jailbreaking,” a safeguard that would prevent Fable 5 from being used in identifying software vulnerabilities, the company said.

The U.S. government restrictions came in the form of an export control, Anthropic said in its ‌blog post. The U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, which oversees export controls, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Some experts who favor export controls on advanced AI models found the Trump administration’s action puzzling because it affects allied nations as well as adversaries.

“This was not well thought-out,” said Jimmy Goodrich, a senior fellow at the University of California’s Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation. “It even bans Canadians and Brits employed at Anthropic from doing research and development.”

The order came just as a previous dispute between Trump administration officials and Anthropic, which has confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering, showed signs of easing across parts of the U.S. government.
