Georgia Congratulates Armenia’s Nikol Pashinyan on Election Victory

Georgian politicians from both the ruling Georgian Dream party and the opposition congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the victory of his party, Civil Contract, in the June 7 parliamentary elections.

Extending her “warmest congratulations,” Salome Zourabichvili, Georgia’s fifth president, wrote on X, “Today, Armenia firmly chose a free, independent, and European future. This historic vote reinforces democracy and solidifies our region’s place in the family of European nations.” Zourabichvili was among the first Georgian politicians to congratulate Pashinyan, posting her message at 21:05, after exit poll results were released but before preliminary election results were announced.

Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze followed with “heartfelt congratulations,” writing on X at 23:14, “Looking forward to continuing our close cooperation to strengthen the strategic partnership and friendly relations between Georgia and Armenia for the prosperity of our nations.”

Opposition Federalists party leader Tamar Chergoleishvili wrote on Facebook, “As expected, Armenia has remained on the only correct path. We will also set things right. Long live a free Armenia and a free Georgia.”

With votes from all polling stations counted, Armenia’s Civil Contract party of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had secured 49.81%, likely allowing it to form a government alone, while the Strong Armenia alliance, widely viewed as pro-Russian, received 23.29%.

The election was broadly seen as a check on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s ability to deepen ties with the West. Tbilisi closely followed the vote, aware that its outcome could influence Georgia’s trajectory as the country navigates foreign policy uncertainty amid the Georgian Dream government’s drift away from the Western orbit in recent years.
