Tbilisi Condemns Drone Attack on Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan

Georgia’s Foreign Ministry said it condemns the drone attack in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan that injured several civilians.

“Any act that blatantly violates international principles and norms and escalates regional tensions is unacceptable,” the ministry stated on March 5, hours after the attack.

“Georgia expresses its solidarity with the fraternal Azerbaijan in this difficult situation, given the strong friendship and strategic partnership between Georgia and the Republic of Azerbaijan,” the ministry added.

At least two people were injured in the March 5 drone attack on an airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave, amid the widening conflict in the Middle East. Azerbaijan accused Iran of the attack, but Tehran denied any involvement.

In addition to condemning the attack, Georgian Dream Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili spoke by phone with her Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, to express “deep concern” over the incident.

“Minister [Botchorishvili] emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said, adding, “The ministers reaffirmed the strength of the strategic and friendly relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan.”

The war in the Middle East appears to be widening days after the U.S. and Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes by Tehran on Israel and U.S. military targets in neighboring Gulf states. As Israel and Iran continue to exchange strikes, the latest attack on Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave has raised concerns that the conflict may spill beyond the Middle East.

Regional security concerns have further grown after Middle East Eye cited a senior Arab source saying Iran could target the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline in potential retaliation against Israel.
