Since late February 2026, the Strait of Hormuz has become the central theatre of the US–Iran confrontation. Following joint US–Israeli strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks across the Gulf and issued warnings to vessels attempting to pass through the strait. Ukraine does not want to lose US support for its war against Russia as a result of Washington’s war with Iran, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told journalists, AzerNEWS reports.

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani has warned of what he described as a possible conspiracy to frame Iran for a major terrorist incident.

The second week of March was dominated by the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, centered on the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supply passes. The International Energy Agency (IEA) also launched a record release of 400 million barrels of oil from strategic stockpiles to curb massive market disruption caused by the war, AzerNEWS reports.
