iPhone, iPad first consumer devices approved for NATO data

Apple’s devices are the first and only consumer mobile products that have reached this government certification level after security testing and evaluation by the German government. iPhones and iPads running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are now certified for use with classified data in all NATO nations, News.Az reports, citing foreign media.
***
In an announcement of the security clearance, Apple touted its security features.
Apple designs security into all of its products from the start, ensuring the most sophisticated protections are built in across hardware, software, and Apple silicon. This unique approach allows Apple users to benefit from industry-leading security protections such as best-in-class encryption, biometric authentication with Face ID, and groundbreaking features like Memory Integrity Enforcement. These same protections are now recognized as meeting stringent government and international security requirements, even for restricted data.
Apple’s vice president of security Ivan Krstić said the achievement reflects Apple’s commitment to security.
This achievement recognizes that Apple has transformed how security is traditionally delivered. Prior to iPhone, secure devices were only available to sophisticated government and enterprise organizations after a massive investment in bespoke security solutions. Instead, Apple has built the most secure devices in the world for all its users, and those same protections are now uniquely certified under assurance requirements for NATO nations — unlike any other device in the industry.
Apple’s ‌iOS 26‌ and ‌iPadOS 26‌ updates are listed on the NATO Information Assurance Product Catalogue, which says Apple devices are able to provide secure access to Mail, Calendar, and Contacts with built-in apps.

Kenyan charged with luring young men to fight for Russia in Ukraine

Festus Arasa Omwamba, head of recruitment agency Global Faces Human Resources, recruited 22 Kenyans “for the purpose of exploitation by means of deception”, state prosecutors said on Thursday, News.az reports, citing BBC.

The victims were rescued last September from an apartment complex in Athi River, a town near the capital, Nairobi, before they could travel to Russia.

However, three others had already left Kenya, finding themselves on the front line of the war and returning home with injuries, the prosecutors added. Omwamba, aged 33, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

BREAKING: Azerbaijani Student Detained by ICE at Columbia – Released After NYC Mayor Mamdani called TRUMP

An Azerbaijani student at Columbia University was detained by federal immigration agents early Thursday morning in a dramatic pre-dawn operation — only to be released hours later following direct political intervention at the highest levels.

The case quickly ignited national attention after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that President Donald Trump had personally confirmed the student would be freed.

Dawn Detention Inside Campus Housing

According to university officials, agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement entered a Columbia-owned residential building around 6:30 a.m. The student, identified as Elaina Aghayeva, an Azerbaijani national, was taken into custody inside her apartment.

A Department of Homeland Security official stated that her student visa had been terminated years earlier and that she had no pending immigration appeals. Officials also said building personnel allowed agents into the premises.

However, Columbia’s acting leadership later suggested federal agents may have misrepresented the purpose of their entry, alleging they referenced a “missing person” situation to gain access. That claim has intensified scrutiny over how the arrest was conducted.

Trump–Mayor Call Changes the Outcome

The situation escalated politically within hours.

Mayor Mamdani posted that he had spoken directly with President Trump, who confirmed the student would be released “imminently.” Shortly after 4:15 p.m. ET, Columbia University confirmed that Aghayeva had been freed.

The White House redirected media inquiries to DHS prior to the mayor’s announcement, while DHS maintained that the detention followed standard enforcement procedure.

Immigration Tensions Back in the Spotlight

The incident comes amid renewed national debate over immigration enforcement. The Trump administration has prioritized immigration operations as a cornerstone policy, and federal activity on college campuses has drawn sharp reactions from both supporters and critics.

Columbia University has been under federal scrutiny in recent years, including funding disputes and compliance reviews tied to federal standards.

Within hours, the Azerbaijani student’s case became more than an isolated detention — it became a flashpoint symbolizing the broader clash between immigration enforcement, university autonomy, and high-stakes political maneuvering.

A Rapid Turn of Events

What began as a quiet early-morning enforcement action turned into a headline-making political reversal in less than a day.

For many observers, the speed of the release — following direct presidential communication — raises questions about how immigration enforcement decisions intersect with political realities.

For now, the student is free. But the controversy surrounding how and why the detention occurred is far from over.

🇦🇿 Developing story.

Massive fire engulfs Iran’s Abadan industrial complex – VIDEO

***
There have been no fatalities or injuries, it said. The site is also home to the nation’s largest oil refinery, with about 500,000 barrels a day of processing capacity.
Six fire crews are battling the latest blaze, and it should be extinguished within an hour, ISNA reported. There is no suggestion in the report that the refinery has been affected.
The incident came as negotiations between Tehran and the US resumed in Geneva in an effort to avert US strikes on the Persian Gulf state.
