The embattled Azerbaijani news site AbzasMedia will continue to operate from exile, despite its entire management team and several journalists having been imprisoned by Azerbaijan’s authorities.
On Thursday, Abzas named veteran Azerbaijani journalist Leyla Mustafayeva as editor-in-chief. The move is understood to have been approved by the site’s founders.
‘The government has depleted the resources of AbzasMedia by arresting its employees, and the resulting repressive environment makes it impossible to operate from Azerbaijan’, AbzasMedia said in a statement, adding that the new editorial team would be ‘scattered in different countries of Europe’.
Leyla Mustafayeva is an investigative journalist currently based in Germany. Mustafayeva became widely known for her journalistic activity surrounding the imprisonment of her husband, journalist Afgan Mukhtarli. Mustafayeva was among the first to report that the Georgian Government was complicit in Mukhtarli’s kidnapping and arrest from Tbilisi by order of the Azerbaijani Government, something that later appeared to be confirmed by a former top Georgian security official.
Mustafayeva also founded Fakt Yoxla, a media monitoring project.
In their statement, AbzasMedia also thanked supporters.
‘Thank you for your understanding and support during these difficult times. AbzasMedia will be committed to delivering accurate and unbiased news while maintaining the principles of journalism even in the current conditions’, the statement said.
Writing on Facebook after she was appointed editor-in-chief, Mustafayeva vowed to prove the rightness of their cause.
Mustafayeva has also said that several leading international media organisations led by France’s ForbiddenStories had agreed to assist in continuing AbzasMedia’s work, including France 24, the Guardian, Le Monde, the OCCRP, Der Standard and others.
In late November, Azerbaijani police arrested five members of AbzasMedia and accised them of smuggling foreign currency. These included director and founder Ulvi Hasanli, editor-in-chief Sevinj Vagifqizi, deputy director Mahammad Kakalov, and journalists Hafiz Babali and Nargiz Absalamova.
Later, Ilhamiz Guliyev, a former police officer and human rights defender who had given an interview to AbzasMedia, was arrested on drug charges.
Azerbaijani authorities have since also arrested several bloggers.

A group of high-ranking servicemen of the Azerbaijan Army continues visiting Türkiye
In Türkiye, the Azerbaijani delegation visited the monument of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the park in Ankara and the mausoleum Anıtkabir of the founder of the Republic of Türkiye, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The memory of the Great Leaders of both countries was honored.
As part of the visit, the Azerbaijani representatives met with the Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Türkiye, Mr. Yaşar Güler and the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Army General Metin Gürak. Both meetings emphasized that the cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye in all fields, including the military is based on friendly and fraternal relations, and satisfaction was expressed at the high level of relations between the two countries.
The high-ranking military personnel of the Azerbaijan Army visited the teaching buildings of the Land Forces Higher Military School of the National Defense University and got acquainted with the material and technical base and the created conditions. They were given detailed information about the educational process.
Within the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation visited various commands and operational centers of the Turkish Armed Forces, as well as military industrial companies, where they got acquainted with the activities of the headquarters, weapons and vehicle and military equipment.

Азербайджанская делегация, находящаяся с визитом в Турции, посетила памятник Общенациональному лидеру нашего народа Гейдару Алиеву в одноименном парке в Анкаре и мавзолей-могилу основателя Турецкой Республики Мустафы Кемаля Ататюрка. С глубоким уважением была почтена светлая память великих лидеров Азербайджана и Турции.
В рамках визита представители азербайджанской делегации встретились с министром национальной обороны Турецкой Республики Яшаром Гюлером и начальником Генерального штаба Вооруженных сил генералом армии Метином Гюраком. На встречах было подчеркнуто, что военное сотрудничество между Азербайджаном и Турцией, равно как и сотрудничество в других областях, основывается на дружеских и братских отношениях, было выражено удовлетворение высоким уровнем двустороннего взаимодействия.
Высокопоставленные военнослужащие Азербайджанской Армии посетили учебные корпуса Высшей военной школы Сухопутных войск Национального университета обороны, ознакомились с материально-технической базой и созданными условиями. Была предоставлена подробная информация об учебном процессе.
В рамках визита азербайджанская делегация посетила различные командования и операционные центры Вооруженных Сил Турецкой Республики, а также военно-промышленные компании, где ознакомилась с деятельностью штабов, вооружением, техникой и средствами военного назначения.
