France has announced the closure of its embassy in a former colony, citing “constraints” imposed by Niger‘s military government as a determining factor in the decision. The move underscores growing tensions between the two nations and raises concerns about the stability of diplomatic relations.
The decision to shutter the embassy was confirmed by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which released a statement expressing regret over the necessity of the action. The statement indicated that the decision was made due to “unacceptable constraints” imposed by Niger’s military authorities, without providing specific details.
France has maintained a diplomatic presence in Niger for decades, and the closure of the embassy marks a notable escalation in the strained relations between the former colonial power and its African counterpart.
