Lebanese parliament approves extension of army commander’s term for one year

Lebanese parliament on Friday approved the extension of the army commander Joseph Aoun’s term for one more year, the National News Agency reported.

There has been a months-long split among political parties over the extension of Aoun’s term, raising fears among the public as the country already suffered from severe economic and political problems amid the absence of a president since last October and the persistent armed conflict with Israel on the southern border.

The Lebanon-Israel border has witnessed increased tension since Oct. 8 after the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets toward Israel in support of the Hamas attack on Israel the previous day, prompting the Israeli response by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.

The confrontations have killed 154 on the Lebanese side, including 107 Hezbollah members, according to unnamed security sources.
