U.S. House Republicans on Wednesday voted to authorize impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, in a 221-212 vote along party lines.
“The impeachment power resides solely with the House of Representatives,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, a hardliner within the Republican party, told reporters.
“If a majority of the House now says we’re in an official impeachment inquiry as part of our constitutional duty to do oversight, that carries weight. That’s going to help us get these witnesses in,” said the Ohio Republican, one of the leaders of the impeachment push.
Republicans hope that the impeachment inquiry vote would give them better legal standing to hold the president’s son Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress should he fail to show.
Hunter Biden, the first child of a sitting president to be criminally indicted, appeared at a news conference outside the Capitol Wednesday morning, when he again offered to testify in a public hearing, after refusing to appear at a closed-door deposition Republicans demanded.
As of now, no substantiated evidence has surfaced to demonstrate that Joe Biden, in his current or past official capacities, engaged in the misuse of his position or accepted illicit payments. However, ethical concerns have been raised regarding the international business dealings of the Biden family.
Less than a year ahead of the 2024 presidential election, the U.S. president will be fighting a Republican impeachment bid while his son Hunter Biden struggles to avoid prison in tax and gun-related cases.
This year has seen President Biden’s popularity fall amid still elevated inflation and intensifying Israel-Palestine conflict, among other factors.
An NBC poll last month found that Biden’s popularity stood at its lowest in his presidency, with most voters viewing him in a “negative” light.
“It is the widespread disillusionment that any government operating under the current inept rules will accomplish nothing of use to the average citizen that I find most worrisome,” Greg Cusack, a former member of the Iowa House of Representatives and a longtime Democrat, told Xinhua.
“It is this sentiment that I think is behind the reported serious erosion of support for Biden among not only people of color but also of the young,” Cusack said.
On the Republican side, the race has been dominated by former President Donald Trump, who is only bolstered among his voting base by the four criminal indictments he faces.
With Trump taking a wide lead, former Vice President Mike Pence and U.S. Senator from South Carolina Tim Scott, among others, recently dropped out of the 2024 Republican presidential campaign
The US welcomes the return of Armenian and Azerbaiajni detainees, Spokesperson for the US Department of State Matthew Miller said at a daily briefing.
“This is something that we have encouraged, actively encouraged in talks with both governments,” he said.
“We welcome the return of the Armenian and Azerbaijani detainees and reports that additional confidence-building measures are being discussed. We will continue to work with Armenia and Azerbaijan to move the process forward. We continue to believe that peace is possible if both parties are willing to pursue it,” Miller stated.
The Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to Canada hosted a reception in honor of Senator Leo Housakos, on the occasion of him being awarded the Order of Friendship by the President of the Republic of Armenia.
Ambassador Harutyunyan congratulated Senator Housakos on the award and emphasized that it not only symbolizes Armenians’ profound gratitude for his enduring friendship, but is a testament for his exemplary leadership to fostering protection of human rights and justice on the international stage.
Representatives of Canada’s federal and provincial legislatures, Levon Afeyan, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia to Quebec, as well as representatives of Armenian, Greek and Jewish communities attended the event.
The US House of Representatives has voted to formalize its impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, the BBC reports.
Lawmakers voted along party lines to back a resolution that Republicans say will give them more power to gather evidence and enforce legal demands.
Three Republican-led House committees allege bribery and corruption during Mr Biden’s tenure as vice-president.
But they have yet to present evidence of wrongdoing, and Mr Biden says his opponents are “attacking me with lies”.
The lower chamber of Congress, which Republicans control by a slim eight-seat margin, approved the inquiry on Wednesday afternoon by a vote of 221 to 212.
Voting to authorise an inquiry is not the same as voting for impeachment, but it advances the likelihood that the House will eventually seek to impeach Mr Biden.
In a statement, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the chamber “will not prejudge the investigation’s outcome” but “the evidentiary record is impossible to ignore”.
A formal impeachment investigation, that leads to a House vote and a Senate trial, could represent a major headache for the president in the midst of an election year.
But, even if the House ultimately opts to impeach the president, the Democrat-controlled Senate is all but certain to acquit him.
Ölkəmizdə 2023-cü ilin “Heydər Əliyev İli” elan edilməsi haqqında Azərbaycan Respublikasınım Prezidentinin Sərəncamının icrası ilə əlaqədar müdafiə nazirinin təsdiq etdiyi plana əsasən Azərbaycan Ordusunda keçirilən silsilə tədbirlər davam edir.
Ulu Öndər Heydər Əliyevin zəkasının işığında qalib Azərbaycan ölkəsi daha xoşbəxt, firavan gələcəyə, zəfərdən-zəfərlərə doğru inamla irəliləməkdədir. Dövlətimizin başçısı, Müzəffər Ali Baş Komandan cənab İlham Əliyevin rəhbərliyi altında son 20 ildə qazanılan bütün uğurlarda məhz xalqımızı və dövlətimizi zamanın bütün tarixi-siyasi sınaqlarından uğurla çıxaran dahi liderimizin ideyaları durur.
Ulu Öndər istəyirdi ki, hər bir Azərbaycan gənci vətənpərvər olsun. Milli dəyərlərimizi, milli ənənələrimizi, tariximizi yaxşı bilməyən gənc vətənpərvər ola bilməz. Hər bir gənc vətənpərvər olmalıdır. Vətənpərvərlik böyük bir məfhumdur, bu sadəcə orduda xidmət etmək deyil, Vətənə sadiq olmaq, Vətəni sevmək, torpağa bağlı olmaq – budur vətənpərvərlik.
General, zabit, gizir və əsgərlərin iştirak etdikləri Ulu Öndərin xatirəsinə həsr olunmuş ədəbi-bədii gecədə bu barədə ətraflı söhbət açılıb.
Tədbirdən öncə Ümummilli Liderin hərbi hissə qərargahının qarşısında ucaldılan abidəsi ziyarət olunub, önünə əklil və qızıl güllər düzülüb, xatirəsi ehtiramla yad edilib.
Əsgər klubunda keçirilən tədbirdə Vətən Müharibəsi Qəhrəmanı general-mayor Kənan Seyidov Ulu Öndərin Vətən, xalq, dövlət qarşısında müstəsna xidmətlərindən danışıb. Qeyd edilib ki, müasir, mütəşəkkil Azərbaycan Ordusunu yaratmaq, formalaşdırmaq Heydər Əliyevin adı ilə bağlıdırsa, bu ordunun respublikamızın suverenliyini, ərazi bütövlüyünü bərpa edən qalib bir ordu səviyyəsinə qaldırmaq dahi liderimizin özü qədər inandığı və gələcəyinə böyük ümidlər bəslədiyi Azərbaycan Prezidenti, Müzəffər Ali Baş Komandan cənab İlham Əliyevin adı ilə bağlıdır.
Nəzərə çatdırılıb ki, Heydər Əliyev mənalı həyatının 60 ilini öz xalqının bu günü və gələcəyi üçün yaşayıb, istər bir Azərbaycan Respublikasının vətəndaşı, istərsə də onun rəhbəri, Prezidenti kimi Ulu Öndərin həyat amalı yalnız bütün varlığı qədər sevdiyi Azərbaycan xalqına, dövlətçiliyinə, ölkəmizin siyasi, iqtisadi və mənəvi inkişafına xidmət olmuşdur. Bu yolda bütün gücünü və iradəsini yalnız müdrik və qədirbilən xalqımızdan almış, ən çətin anlarda, ən mürəkkəb vəziyyətlərdə belə yalnız və yalnız öz xalqına arxalanmışdır. Heydər Əliyevin ideyaları bugün də yaşayır, xalqımızı və ordumuzun şəxsi heyətini daha böyük uğurlu sabahlara aparmaqdadır.
Çıxış edən hərbi qulluqçular Ulu Öndər ilə bağlı xatirələrini söyləyib və bu gün də Heydər Əliyev ideyalarına sadiq qaldıqlarını, Müzəffər Ali Baş Komandanın hər bir əmrinə hazır olduqlarını bəyan ediblər.
Sonra tədbir iştirakçılarına Əməkdar incəsənət xadimi, Prezidentin fərdi təqaüdçüsü polkovnik Abdulla Qurbaninin eyniadlı poeması əsasında Bakı Bələdiyyə Teatrının hazırladığı “Xilaskar” adlı rekviyem-tamaşası təqdim olunub. Tamaşada Ulu Öndərin hər bir Azərbaycan əsgəri üçün örnək olan mənalı ömür yolundan, xidmətlərindən geniş söhbət açılıb.
Teatrın yaradıcı heyətinin hər il olduğu kimi, bu il də hərbi hissənin şəxsi heyəti qarşısında yeni proqramla çıxışı böyük maraq və alqışlarla qarşılanıb.

The recent visit of Abkhazian President Aslan Bzhania to the parliament of the republic, during which he criticized the collective West, many observers called “duty”. And they are partly right. Indeed, Bzhania periodically meets with deputies. And far from “for the sake of ticking boxes”.
Aslan Bzhania is in urgent need of realization of three projects that are fundamentally important for him:
- transfer of the state house in Pitsunda to Russia;
- denationalization of the energy sector and admission of Russian investors into it;
- mass construction of apartments along the entire coastal zone, the main buyers of which should be Russians.
- Abkhazia to transfer more than 180 hectares in the best resort of Pitsunda to Russia
- Russian investments to overcome the energy crisis in Abkhazia?
- The new “law on apartments” in Abkhazia: why is it forbidden to sell real estate to foreigners?
Aslan Bzhania has been trying to implement these projects almost since he came to power in 2020. However, every time he is faced with a “wall” of parliamentary misunderstanding. Deputies do not want to meet the President and support his initiatives.
So, President Aslan Bzhania once again came to the parliament with the sole purpose – to persuade the deputies to vote in favor of the projects he lobbied for. But this time he added another geopolitical argument to the usual argument: “We have a lot of problems, and we cannot solve them on our own with our own resources without the support of Moscow”. And this makes the current visit of the president to the parliament not quite ordinary.
“Abkhazia is one of the pain points of the current global confrontation. The West, represented by the US and European countries, is doing everything possible to keep us out. They do not want to see our right to be ourselves, they do not want to see our passports, they do not want to see Abkhazia as part of the world. They want to talk to us through an intermediary in Tbilisi, they want our capital to be in Tbilisi, not Sukhum, and they are systematically working to make this happen.
They need this in order to show the world the insignificance of recognition of our sovereignty by the Russian Federation, as well as to show Georgia and other countries of the region that the key to solving problems lies in their pockets. They are doing everything possible and impossible so that there is no development in Abkhazia,” – said Bzhania at a meeting with MPs.
Never before, under any president, even in the most difficult times for the republic, has geopolitics been used so accentuated to solve internal problems. But now, apparently, this moment has come. It seems to be the last trump card for Aslan Bzhania. And it is very doubtful. Since he is too overdrawn by his dramaturgy.
Moreover, if, for example, one listens more carefully to the phrase “the West represented by the U.S. and European countries is doing everything possible to keep us away”, then another associative series with the opposite effect will surely emerge.
If Washington and Brussels have been doing everything possible to bury Abkhazian statehood for 30 years around the clock, as Bzhania claims, and they have failed so far, it means one of two things:
Abkhazia is beyond the teeth of the collective West, and, accordingly, the Abkhazian people, who have withstood such pressure, will cope with any challenges, including those that Bzhania considers “impossible”.
Abkhazia is not the center of the universe for the West to constantly think about it and build intrigues. It is just a beautiful little periphery, with not very developed democratic institutions. That is why elected rulers are in fact bad managers and they are trying to compensate their inefficiency in only one way – blatant propaganda.
