A former UN environment chief has praised China’s green development, saying it reflects the country’s effort to build a Beautiful China.
Erik Solheim, who served as the United Nations undersecretary-general and executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme from 2016 to 2018, said he was impressed by China’s achievements in tackling climate change and promoting ecological civilization.
“China’s tree planting is leading the world and it reins in the desert in a way no other nation has achieved,” Solheim said, citing the example of the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, where more than 6,000 square kilometers of barren land have been turned into green oases.
“China’s green technology also won the applause of Solheim. “Basically on every environment technology, China is leading at scale,” he said, mentioning China’s achievements in wind, solar, electric vehicles, and hydrogen energy.
Solheim, who is also the president of the Belt and Road Initiative Green Development Institute, said he was optimistic about the prospects of green cooperation between China and other countries under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. He said the initiative could provide opportunities for sharing best practices, transferring technology, and mobilizing investment for sustainable development.
