A recent outbreak of a drug-resistant strain of Shigella alarms bell inside the Israeli military and has been spreading among the soldiers fighting the war against Hamas in Gaza.
The bacterial infection Shigella is a type of bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. It spreads through contact with feces, such as through sexual activity, contaminated food or water, or poor hygiene. Shigella infections are usually mild and resolve on their own, but some cases may require antibiotics to treat severe symptoms or prevent complications.
There has been a recent outbreak of Shigella among Israeli soldiers who are deployed in the Gaza Strip. The outbreak is reportedly caused by a strain of Shigella that is resistant to most commonly used antibiotics, such as azithromycin and ciprofloxacin. This makes the infection harder to treat and more likely to spread. The outbreak may have been triggered by poor sanitation conditions, food poisoning, or contact with residents.
The outbreak of drug-resistant Shigella is a serious public health threat, not only for the Israeli forces but also for the Palestinian population and the neighboring countries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of an increased risk of contagious disease in Gaza because of the Israeli air bombardments that have disrupted the health system, and access to clean water, and forced people to crowd in shelters.
