Muslim Americans in swing states threaten to abandon Biden over Israel-Gaza war

Muslim American and Arab American leaders from several key swing states have expressed their anger and disappointment with President Joe Biden over his handling of the Israel-Gaza war, vowing to withdraw their support for him in the 2024 election.

The leaders, who represent communities in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida and other battleground states, said that Biden’s refusal to call for an immediate ceasefire and his unconditional backing of Israel have betrayed the trust and hopes of millions of Muslim American voters who helped him defeat former President Donald Trump in 2020.

They also accused Biden of ignoring their voices and concerns, and of failing to address the rising Islamophobia and anti-Arab sentiment in the country.

Some of the leaders said they plan to either boycott the 2024 election, vote for a third-party or write-in candidate, or leave the top of the ticket blank, unless Biden changes his course and adopts a more balanced and humane approach to the Middle East conflict.

They warned that losing the support of Muslim American and Arab American voters, who make up a significant and growing segment of the electorate in several swing states, could cost Biden the presidency and jeopardize the Democrats’ chances of retaining control of Congress.

According to a post-election poll conducted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, 69% of Muslim American voters backed Biden in 2020, compared to 17% who voted for Trump. The poll also found that Muslim Americans were among the most active and engaged voters, with 84% reporting that they voted in the 2020 election, and 78% saying they encouraged others to vote.
