According to the ministry, two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets conducting air policing missions were dispatched from the 86th Air Base in Borcea at 5:43 p.m. local time.
The aircraft were deployed after military radar systems identified a group of aerial objects flying approximately 120 kilometres east of Snake Island and moving in a southwesterly direction.
The first aerial target entered Romanian airspace at 5:59 p.m. and was intercepted and destroyed by one of the F-16 aircraft two minutes later, at 6:01 p.m.
A second target crossed into Romanian airspace at 6:01 p.m. and was shot down by the other fighter jet at 6:05 p.m.
The Defence Ministry confirmed that both aerial targets had been identified as unmanned aerial vehicles.
Romanian authorities did not immediately disclose the origin of the drones or provide information about their intended destinations.
The ministry said additional details would be released once the military mission had been completed.
