As of September 2025, former Azerbaijani state oil company (SOCAR) executive Adnan Ahmadzada has been arrested in Baku for allegedly mixing a high-grade Azerbaijani crude, “Azeri Light,” with other petroleum products. Alleged oil fraud: The arrest is linked to allegations that Ahmadzada mixed “Azeri Light” crude with lower-quality products, a form of oil fraud. The incident has brought attention to corruption within Azerbaijan’s energy sector.
Oil contamination incident: In August 2025, Romania’s energy ministry reported that a shipment of crude from a Turkish port had been contaminated with organic chlorides, rendering it unusable.
