Japan has faced strong criticism from China and other neighboring countries for its decision to dump more than one million tons of radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.
The water, which was used to cool the reactors that melted down after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, has been treated to remove most of the radioactive elements, but not tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen.
