All the developments surrounding the recent US elections were rooted, to varying degrees, in an emotional context. When such changes occur in Congress, they reflect voters’ confidence—or lack thereof—in the president’s policies, political scientist Hayk Ter-Nersisyan said in the Alpha News studio.
In his assessment, economic conditions—particularly rising energy prices, including gasoline and natural gas, which are directly linked to developments in the Middle East—were among the principal factors behind the outcome.
“The average American voter may not care about foreign policy at all, but they feel rising fuel prices immediately. It directly affects both household budgets and production costs. Since oil remains a basic input for most goods and services, higher prices inevitably fuel inflation and significantly reduce people’s real purchasing power,” he emphasized.
According to Ter-Nersisyan, the main political struggle will center on Donald Trump’s domestic policies, including personnel appointments.
“Divided government—when the White House & Congress are controlled by different political forces—traditionally compels the executive branch to compromise on key appointments. When nominating candidates for strategic positions, including the Supreme Court, the administration will have to favor centrists with moderate views and avoid figures with radically conservative or ultraliberal agendas,” the political scientist added.
