Bosnia and Herzegovina’s election comes as the country faces political divisions at home and competing interests abroad. Voters are choosing representatives for central and regional institutions, in a vote that could influence the pace of reforms and Bosnia’s efforts to move towards EU membership. The election is also being closely watched by the United States and Russia, both of which have longstanding interests in the Balkans. Alongside these geopolitical stakes, new biometric identification, ballot scanners and electronic result transmission are being introduced for the first time in a general election.
