Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made an unexpected visit to China, arriving in Beijing today. This visit follows his recent trips to Kiev and Moscow last week, where he engaged in what he termed a “peace mission.”
Orban’s arrival in Beijing marks his third surprise overseas trip since Hungary assumed the European Union’s rotating presidency at the beginning of July. His visit to Moscow drew strong rebukes from his allies, highlighting the controversial nature of his diplomatic efforts.
In Beijing, Orban is scheduled to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Hungary, under Orban’s leadership, has become a significant trade and investment partner for China, contrasting with some other European Union nations seeking to reduce their dependence on the world’s second-largest economy.
This visit comes just days before a NATO summit, where further military aid for Ukraine will be discussed. Orban, known for his critical stance on Western military aid to Ukraine, continues to position himself as a unique voice within the European Union.
