Britain to “go faster” on defense spending: PM

Sky News reported that Starmer said its commitment to defense also depends on “whether you coordinate and collaborate with other like-minded countries, particularly in Europe”, News.az reports, citing Xinhua.
***
Last year, Britain announced that it would lift annual defense spending to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027 and aim for 3 percent in the next parliament, which is expected to be in 2029.
At the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Saturday, Starmer announced that Britain would deploy a carrier strike group to the North Atlantic and the High North this year. The prime minister also claimed that Britain is no longer the country it was during the Brexit years.

Global conference opens in Kenya to boost tourism resilience

The three-day conference, organized by the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Center, brought together more than 200 policymakers, industry leaders, development partners and investors to explore solutions to overcome disruptions in the tourism sectorNews.Az reports, citing BSS News.
***
Rebecca Miano, Kenya’s cabinet secretary of tourism and wildlife, said that threats facing the tourism sector range from physical challenges to reputational risks caused by misinformation and cybercrime, which can shift demand.
“Kenya is implementing specific crisis management systems, such as early warning tools, to support the recovery of the tourism sector,” Miano said.
Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s minister of tourism, said that tourism resilience should be treated as a pillar of global sustainability because it protects livelihoods and shields vulnerable countries.
Lloyd Waller, executive director of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Center, said the world is now in an era in which extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, disrupt tourism activities.
Denay Jock Chagor, South Sudan’s minister of wildlife conservation and tourism, highlighted the need for regional cooperation to build an adaptive tourism system capable of withstanding future shocks.
The conference is expected to produce concrete outcomes, including a “Resilience in Action” report, launch new measurement indicators and forge cross-sectoral partnerships aimed at future-proofing tourism against emerging threats.

Arab League denounces Israel’s West Bank land registration decision

In a statement, the AL denounced the Israeli move “in the strongest terms,” saying the step is “a null and void unilateral measure” aimed at imposing new facts on the ground and serving as a preparatory step toward the annexation of the occupied Palestinian territories, News.az reports, citing ABC News.
***
Entrenching the policy of illegal settlement activity undermines the prospects for achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution, it added.
The continuation of these policies would exacerbate tensions and threaten security and stability in the region, leading to further violence and instability, the AL warned, calling for an urgent intervention by the international community, especially the UN Security Council.
Israel on Sunday approved a plan to register West Bank land as “state property,” a move that could strengthen Israeli claims and facilitate settlement expansion. The plan, submitted by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, and Defense Minister Israel Katz, was approved by the cabinet, according to a joint statement.
For the first time since the 1967 Middle East war, which brought the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza under Israeli control, the cabinet authorized a land registration process in the West Bank. The Land Registry and Settlement of Rights, a government authority under the Justice Ministry, will carry out the process with dedicated staff and budget.

Feature: Spring Festival atmosphere welcomes China-bound travelers at London Heathrow

The event was held to mark the upcoming Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year – the most important traditional holiday in China and a time for family reunions, News.Az reports, citing CNBC.
***
At Heathrow, a Spring Festival send-off ceremony featured red lanterns, spring couplets and intricate paper-cut window decorations, all traditional elements associated with the holiday. Staff distributed holiday gift packs and cultural souvenirs to travelers, while many passengers stopped to learn about Spring Festival traditions and take photos.
Organizers said the event aimed to allow foreign travelers to experience the festive spirit before arriving in China, while also creating a warm holiday atmosphere for overseas Chinese communities.
The lively celebration comes amid growing interest in travel to China. For an increasing number of international travelers, visiting China has become part of their travel plans, driven by curiosity about the country’s rich culture, modern cities and diverse landscapes.
Thomas Berger, a French national working in the United Kingdom, was embarking on his first trip to Asia. His itinerary includes five Chinese cities – Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Zhangjiajie and Shanghai – combining historical landmarks, modern urban life and natural scenery. Chengdu, he said, was the destination he most looked forward to, particularly for its cuisine.
Berger said much of his travel planning was based on online resources, especially short-form travel videos. In recent years, content tagged “China Travel” has gained popularity across global social media platforms, where foreign bloggers and tourists document their experiences and share practical tips.
Despite traveling to China for the first time, Berger said he felt reassured after hearing from others that the country is “super safe,” an impression echoed by several travelers interviewed at the airport.
Emil Ive, a retail manager making his first trip outside Europe, planned to visit Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Sichuan. Chongqing held particular significance for him, as he would meet a Chinese friend there for the first time after connecting online through a shared interest in each other’s cultures. He said communication had been facilitated by translation functions on the messaging app WeChat.
For project manager Kaelan Meehan, the journey carried personal meaning. His destination included Qiqihar in northeast China, the hometown of his wife. The trip marked his fourth visit to China and his first experience of winter in the country’s northeast. He said he looked forward to spending time with family amid the snowy landscape.
To further facilitate cross-border travel, China will extend its visa-free policy to ordinary passport holders from Canada and the United Kingdom starting Feb. 17, 2026, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Sunday.
The announcement was welcomed by Meehan and his wife, who said they hoped to bring his parents on a future visit so both families could reunite.
Some travelers have already spent extended periods in China. Lucas Richman, a Chinese-language student at Durham University currently on exchange at Zhejiang University, boarded a flight to Shenzhen before continuing by high-speed rail to Hangzhou. Speaking fluent Mandarin, he said he seeks to explore widely and interact with local residents to deepen his understanding of Chinese culture. During the Spring Festival, he planned to celebrate with fellow international students at a guesthouse in Moganshan in east China’s Zhejiang Province.
Zhang Li, director of the China National Tourist Office in London, said the Spring Festival serves not only as an emotional symbol for the Chinese people but also as an important window through which the world can better understand China.
“Hosting send-off events at overseas airports allows travelers to feel the festive atmosphere from the very beginning of their journey,” Zhang said.

German president voices support for Lebanon during visit

Following his meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Steinmeier said the German side supports the Lebanese army and wants to help rebuild everything that has been destroyed with the support of friends, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.
***
Steinmeier added that his visit aimed at calling on Hezbollah and Israel to adhere to the ceasefire agreement, stressing that the disarmament of Hezbollah should proceed in parallel with the withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from southern Lebanon, the NNA reported.
Aoun, for his part, said that unity is achieved only through complete independence and the state’s sole authority over all its lands, adding that Lebanon aims to rebuild what has been destroyed through its own will and capabilities, with the support of friends, the NNA reported.
A ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel has been in effect since Nov. 27, 2024. Despite the agreement, Israel has continued to carry out occasional strikes in Lebanon, claiming they are aimed at eliminating Hezbollah “threats.”

Israel restricts Al-Aqsa imam amid growing tensions

The Jerusalem Governorate said in a statement that Sheikh Muhammad Ali Abbasi was detained by Israeli forces and banned from entering the mosque compound for a week. It did not say why he was barred, News.Az reports, citing foreign media.
***
The move comes amid Israeli escalation across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, including restrictions on the entry of worshippers and intensified incursions by illegal settlers into the flashpoint complex.
Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, is set to start this week.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world’s third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area Temple Mount, claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. It annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move never recognized by the international community.

Bangladesh interim leader steps down as new government takes over

Speaking in a farewell broadcast to the nation on Monday, Yunus said the interim government he oversees “is stepping down”, News.Az reports, citing Al Jazeera.
***

“But let the practice of democracy, freedom of speech, and fundamental rights that has begun not be halted,” he said.
An 85-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, Yunus returned from self-imposed exile in August 2024 to serve as Bangladesh’s chief adviser after a student-led uprising toppled the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bangladesh held its first general elections since that uprising on February 12, and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, won a landslide victory.
Rahman, a scion of one of the country’s most powerful political dynasties, is set to serve as prime minister of the incoming government when it is sworn in on Tuesday, according to Bangladeshi media.
Yunus praised the recent elections, which European Union observers called “credible and competently managed” as a “benchmark for future elections”.
“The people, voters, political parties, and stakeholder institutions linked to the election have set a commendable example,” Yunus said.
